We talk a lot about creating or designing for biodiversity, ecological health and resilience. But many rich ecological relationships aren't designed at all — they emerge spontaneously, often unnoticed, out of unintended encounters between plants, animals, people, soils and materials. Urban and disturbed landscapes are especially good places to watch these slow spectacles happen. A patch of ground that at first glance looks empty or ecologically poor can turn out to hold a dense meshwork of life: plants that arrived along former trade routes, disturbed soil turning into habitat, industrial waste becoming substrate for a new plant community. This session invites to explore such unruly collaborations and how design practice can move from control to accompaniment of living processes, through a short story and a collage. — Session Host: Dr. Anna Lena Hahn is a landscape designer and researcher working at the intersection of geography, landscape architecture, and ecology. Alongside her collaboration with the urbanism and landscape agency Résonance, she works with the Paris-based start-up BACSAC and teaches at Institut Agro Rennes-Angers in France.
